Two ways in

You can sign in with Google, with an email and password, or both. They are additive: adding a password does not disable Google sign-in, and removing one leaves the other working.

Setting a password

An account created through Google has no password. The Settings page notices this and offers Set a password rather than “change” — and does not ask for a current password, because there is not one.

If you already have a password, changing it requires the current one. That is what stops someone with a borrowed session locking you out of your own account.

Passwords must be at least 8 characters.

Forgotten passwords

Signing in has a Forgot password? link. What happens next depends on how the account was made:

• Signed up with Google. Use Continue with Google. That proves who you are without an email round-trip, and lands you on the form that sets a password.
• Signed up with a password. Enter your email and a reset link is sent. The link expires in 24 hours.

Setting a new password invalidates any outstanding reset link, so an old email cannot be used to take the account back later.
